Dear Swiss XI friends,
I have to bring some very sad news to your attention.
Yesterday morning I learned that our very dear friend, Wayne Beer, had passed away whilst on holiday in Europe.
Wayne has been a long time member of the Swiss XI community, and has always been a very keen sponsor and supporter of the team. His proactive approach and enthusiasm in organising social gatherings, and his efforts in helping to plan numerous tours and other events, have been at the very core of the Swiss XI for many years.
Swiss XI has benefited greatly from Wayne’s generosity, and many of you will be able to recall with affection and humour any number of occasions which have taken place under Wayne’s guidance or influence. The Swiss XI community will be a poorer place in Wayne’s absence.
Wayne’s wife, Sigi, remains in Europe at the present time, but will return to Hong Kong in the near future. She has asked for privacy in the coming days, so I would ask you all to respect her wishes, and not yet try to contact her to pass on your condolences.
In the fullness of time, I am sure that Sigi will welcome your messages.
Once we know of any plans for a funeral or memorial service, we will of course pass them on.
In the meantime, please take a moment to remember Wayne, for the person, and for the dedicated Swiss XI fan, that he was.

Winners of the annual Swiss XI awards for the past season are as follows:
Prick of the Year (POTY): Jurg Niederberger
- 4 nominees each received 14 points, but Jurg represented 2 of those nominations and was so crowned the POTY 2008-09. His indiscretions ? Firstly, for being so pissed in Manila that he put in Peter's contact lenses and argued that they were his. Secondly, for only staying at training for twenty minutes before leaving to go and play poker on a few occasions.
President's Award: Mark Evans
- as a regular and "robust" player, Mark was often seen hobbling away from games with a variety of injuries. However, he received the President's Award for perhaps the most extreme injury in Swiss XI history - a badly swollen gonad requiring surgery and an extensive hospital stay !
Goal of the Season (GOTS): Florian Schild
- scored in the opening minutes against French Kiss on 21/09/08, in the very first game of the season, this stunning strike by Florian provided the team with the self-belief that we could be competitive in our return to YYL Division One.
Player of the Season (POTS): Rene Buehlmann
- the history books need to be reviewed, but we believe that it has been very seldom, if ever, that a player has appeared in every League and Cup game of a YYL season for Swiss XI. Rene started all 23 matches, but this is made all the more impressive when it is further considered that he netted 23 goals, at an average of 1 per game. |

Congratulations to the combined Swiss Oldies/Dutch Boys for taking The Plate trophy at the Manila Nomads tournament.
There must be life in those old legs yet!

Sven's award was recently presented to him, prior to his departure from Hong Kong.
Franco received a Swiss XI pennant, signed by famous Dutch footballer Ruud Gullit. |
