In the early and mid 1970’s, a group of Swiss soccer players, working and residing in Hong Kong, occasionally gathered for social games against various local teams.
In 1977 an announcement was made, regarding the intended formation of the Yau Yee League, and the Swiss team decided to join this fledgling League as one of the founding members. The team “Swiss XI” was thus officially founded on 13 July 1977.
Two of the founding members are still regularly involved with the team; Albert Hausamman (Vice President) and Peter Klaus (President).
The first season in the YYL was quite memorable as the team finished runner-up. Over the years, Swiss XI has played in each of the First, Second, and Third Divisions. At the time of writing, March 2007, the team is in contention for promotion from Division Two back to the First Division. This follows on the heels of the 2005-06 season in which the team managed to climb out of Division Three.
Another historic highlight came in 1994, when the Swiss XI made it to the Cup Final, only to lose to Squadron (2:2 after official time, 5:4 loss on penalties).
In the early years, most of the players in the team came from the Hong Kong Swiss community, but over the years the team has been represented by many other nationalities. The present day team typifies this cosmopolitan approach, with the many Swiss nationals being complimented by players from across the globe.
The social aspect of the Swiss XI has always been very important. Regular meetings take place; drinks in Wanchai, BBQ’s, outings, end-of-Season football tours, and participation at tournaments across the SE Asia region.
A small, but regular, group of loyal supporters is encouraged to join the team for matches and other activities. Many games are highlighted by these friends, along with wives, girlfriends, and kids cheering from the sidelines. Great friendships have been built over the years, and many former players remain interested in the progress of the Swiss XI, following the weekly reports by email, and visiting the team when traveling through Hong Kong.
The success of the Swiss XI is, and always has been, possible because of a few individuals, who have spent a lot of time organising the team’s YYL activities and other events. Over recent years, Andy Raishbrook (Vice President), has been the soul of the team. However, many other committed players have assisted, and are waiting in the wings for their opportunity to help propel the team into the future.
